Click-Like Sound On Turns – Possible Cancel Cam Interference With Turn Signal

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves diagnosing and, if necessary, replacement of turn signal cancel cam located in the center of the Steering Column Module (SCM).

MODELS:

2005 (WK / WH) Grand Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may experience a click-like sound coming from the Steering Column Module (SCM). The click sound will occur when the turn signals are not in use and the steering wheel is turned to the left or to the right. The click sound may be caused by light contact between the cancel cam in the SCM as it passes by the release lever for the turn signal module.

NOTE: The SCM assembly should not be replaced to correct this conditon. Replace only the cancel cam (ring).

DIAGNOSIS:

  1. Start the vehicle engine. Turn off the radio and HVAC system.
  2. Center the steering wheel. Verify that the turn signal lever is in the neutral/cancelled position.
  3. Slowly rotate the steering wheel at least 180 degrees to the left.
  4. Slowly recenter the steering wheel.
  5. Slowly rotate the steering wheel at least 180 degrees to the right.
  6. Slowly recenter the steering wheel.
  7. If a click-like sound was heard while performing the above steps, then lightly place your hand on the turn signal stalk/arm when the arm is in its neutral/cancelled position. Repeat the above steps.
  8. If contact can be felt in the turn signal stalk/arm at the same time as a click-like sound occurs, then perform the Repair Procedure.
  9. If no contact can be felt in the turn signal stalk/arm, then this bulletin does not apply and further diagnosis is required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

WARNING:To avoid personal injury or death, on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, occupant classification system, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the supplemental restraint system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

CAUTION: Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. In this position the Steering Control Module (SCM) clockspring is centered. When the SCM is removed temporarily install a temporary locking pin in the SCM locking pin hole to prevent the SCM clockspring from rotating. The clockspring centering procedure must be performed if the SCM clockspring is not temporarily locked in place.

Replace the turn signal cancel cam/ring located in the center of the SCM by following the detailed Turn Signal Cancel Cam removal and installation procedures available on TechCONNECT (“SERVICE INFO” tab / 8 – ELECTRICAL / LAMPS LIGHTING EXTERIOR / TURN SIGNAL CANCEL CAM / REMOVAL or INSTALLATION ).

In addition, reference can be made to the Steering Column Module service procedures on TechCONNECT (“SERVICE INFO” tab / 8 – ELECTRICAL / ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES / STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE / REMOVAL or INSTALLATION / STEERING CONTROL MODULE).
