Short Duration Cold Engine Start-up Ticking Like Sound

 

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves replacing the swivel pads and swivel pad retainer on the exhaust rocker arms.

 

MODELS:

1998 – **2004** (LH) 300M/Concorde/Intrepid/LHS
2004 (CS) Pacifica
**1999 – 2002 (PR) Prowler**

 

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to March 31, 2003 (MDH 0331xx) equipped with a 3.2L or 3.5L engine (sales codes EGC, EGE, EGG, EGJ, EGK, EGN AND EGW).

 

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Engine ticking like sound after a cold engine start-up. The ticking like sound may only last 2 to 3 seconds.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

  1. Remove cylinder head covers. Refer to the service information available on TechCONNECT or in the appropriate service manual in Section 9 – ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) – REMOVAL for detailed removal instructions.

NOTE: If this procedure has already been performed on this vehicle the swivel pad retainers will be colored blue and the swivel pads will be copper in color on the exhaust rocker arm assembly (Fig. 1).

  1. Remove rocker arm assembly bolts.
  2. Remove rocker arm assembly.

NOTE: To prevent air ingestion into lash adjusters, avoid turning rocker arm assembly upside down or placing pressure on the lash adjuster.

  1. Remove the retainers and swivel pads from each exhaust rocker arm (Fig. 1).

CAUTION: This bulletin only applies to the exhaust rocker arms. Do not install theses new parts in the intake as damage may occur.

  1. Install the new swivel pads and swivel pad retainers on all exhaust rocker arms (Fig. 1).

NOTE: Do not reuse original yellow retainers.

NOTE: Replace all exhaust swivel pads and retainers as a set.

  1. Install the rocker arm assemblies. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual in Section 9 – ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/ROCKER ARM- INSTALLATION for detailed installation instructions.
  2. Install cylinder head covers. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual in Section 9 – ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) – INSTALLATION for detailed installation instructions.
  3. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for the other side cylinder head exhaust rocker arm assemblies. -3- 09-002-04
