Roof Top Tent Cover May Crack and Detach

If the roof top tent cover detaches from the vehicle while moving, it can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Erwin Hymer Group USA LP dba American Fastbacks (EHGUSA-AF) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles sold with a roof top tent installed. The top cover of the roof top tent may crack or break, possibly resulting in the cover detaching from the vehicle while moving.

 

Remedy

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall began May 9, 2019. Owners may contact American Fastbacks customer service at 1-844-533-7997 extension 301. Note: Vehicles in this recall are also included in recall 19V-190.

REGARDING:  Jeep Wrangler Vehicles – American Fastback Edition: Badlands Model

Erwin Hymer Group USA L.P. dba American Fastbacks (“EHGUSA-AF”) has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in the above listed vehicles sold by EHGUSA-AF.  You must stop operating the above referenced vehicle models at this time.  EHGUSA-AF has learned that vehicles with an installed roof-top tent are a possible safety risk.  A quality issue in a part manufactured by a third-party may cause the roof top tent to crack under extreme weather conditions, which case lead to the top cover becoming detached from a driving vehicle.

The company is in the process of filing a report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Please note that the affected vehicles are already subject to an earlier NHTSA recall.  This is an additional recall that only affects the Badlands Models.

It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease a new motor vehicle covered by this notification. Dealers may not sell or lease vehicles currently in their possession to consumers.

Dealers must provide contact information to EHGUSA-AF for consumers who purchased vehicles so that appropriate notices can be transmitted to them.

You must stop operating the above referenced vehicle models.

Erwin Hymer Group USA L.P. dba American Fastbacks (“EHGUSA-AF”) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2018 Jeep Wrangler Vehicles – American Fastback Edition: Badlands model, which were likely sold between January 2018 and February 2019.

We understand that you own or may have owned one of these Jeep Wrangler Vehicles – American Fastback Edition.

 

!! IMPORTANT !!

• The Jeep Wrangler Vehicles – American Fastback Edition is being recalled by the manufacturer, Erwin Hymer Group USA L.P. d/b/a American Fastbacks.
• You should cease any use of the vehicle.
• You should not drive the vehicle and should contact your dealer or Erwin Hymer Group USA L.P. to pick up your vehicle at its current location.

 

Why is a recall being conducted?	Erwin Hymer Group USA L.P. dba American Fastbacks (“EHGUSA-AF”) the manufacturer of the Jeep Wrangler Vehicles – American Fastback Edition: Badlands model, has identified a safety defect related to vehicles sold between January 2018 and February 2019. EHGUSA-AF has determined that there may be a quality issue which could cause the roof top tent to crack due to certain weather conditions. This can lead to the top cover becoming detached from a moving vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
What are we doing about the problem?	The affected vehicles are already subject to a different NHTSA recall number 19V190.  Under that recall, EHGUSAAF plans to buy back vehicles (in some cases conditional upon obtaining third party financing) within 30 days of funding date.  All vehicles impacted by this recall will be subject to the remedy provided for in the prior recall you have already been notified about.
What should you do?	You should immediately stop using your vehicle. Please contact EHGUSA-AF at the following toll-free number: 1-844-533-7997 x 301. Please provide Information to arrange to have your vehicle collected from its current location. For buyback of your vehicle, please collect your receipts for purchase of the vehicle and related costs, including license and registration fees and send copies to EHGUSA-AF at the following address: 1945 Burgundy Place, Ontario, CA 91761. Please send copies and retain your originals at this time.
What if you no longer own this vehicle? Who should you contact if you	If you no longer own this vehicle, but have the contact information for the new owner, please forward the new owner’s contact information to EHGUSA-AF so that proper notification can be sent. NHTSA 19V320 Recall Remedy Update:

During the upfitting stage of certain 2017 and 2018 Jeep Wrangler models (Sport/Sahara and Rubicon), Erwin

Hymer Group USA LP d/b/a American Fastbacks (the “Company”) installed a roof top tent and brackets to the Badlands model vehicles. This roof top tent was purchased directly from a Chinese manufacturer who ensured all quality requirements such as fit, form and function were met. The Company has learned that the roof top tents fail (e.g. large cracks on top cover) under extreme weather conditions (cold).  A broken or crack top cover can become detached from the tent assembly if sufficient wind is caught underneath it when the vehicle is in motion. The suspect vehicles were shipped to customers with a tie down strap for prevention of any disengaged part of the roof top tent. The population of affected vehicles is also included in the population of vehicles being recalled under NHTSA recall 19V190 which deals with GVWR issues.

The recall remedy will be to remove the supplier roof top tents from the Badlands model vehicles currently in the Company’s possession, as well as Vehicles that the Company recovers from consumers and dealers.^[1]    No replacement tent will be installed instead a roof cross bar system (refer to Figure 1) will be used for bike or kayak attachments.  Current plans include the destruction of all 300+ supplier roof top tents so they are not used again.

[1] The Company is currently in active bankruptcy.  The Company is in the process of obtaining possession of certain Vehicles acquired by consumers pre-recall, and certain Vehicles from dealers that had not been paid for by such dealers or their respective floor plan finance lenders.  Other dealer claims related to the Vehicles may be addressed in the bankruptcy proceeding.
