Fuel Pump Gasket Fuel Leak

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary

Vantage Mobility International, LLC (Vantage) is recalling certain Vantage-modified 2016-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles. The fuel pump gasket may deteriorate, allowing fuel to leak.

 

Remedy

Vantage will notify owners, and will provide parts and reimbursement to owners for repair facilities to replace the fuel tank gasket, free of charge. The recall began May 19, 2020. Owners may contact Vantage customer service at 1-800-488-9082.

SCOPE

This document provides detailed instructions for replacing the fuel tank seals on all 2016-2019 model year Grand Caravans and Town and Countrys. The current seals have been found to degrade which could potentially lead to inaccurate fuel level readings provided to the driver. These instructions guide the technician through the removal of the tank, installation of the new gaskets (FF6510) and tank re-installation

Labor rate for completion of this bulletin is 2.0 hour at VMI warranty labor rates. Replacement seals will be provided by VMI Technical Support. To file a claim contact VMI Tech Support at 800 488 9082 . 

 

CONTENTS

1. Remove as much fuel from vehicle tank as possible. Place vehicle on lift and remove left rear inner fender using either a trim tool or 10m socket

2. Expose fuel fill line and vent lines. Locate UPPER worm clamp attaching the fuel fill line. Loosen worm clamp above metal fill line where it attaches to rubber hose using standard screw driver. (5/16 socket may also be used)

3. Locate fuel vent line by filler line and disconnect using standard screw driver or other pry tool

4. Remove LOWER worm clamp where it attaches to the fuel tank. Remove the fill line from the vehicle taking care not to drop or otherwise damage the line.

5. Locate the vapor canister located to the left of the fuel tank. CAREFULLY remove the UPPER vent line connector making sure not to damage either the connector or vapor canister.

6. Place transmission jack under fuel tank prior to tank removal

7. Locate fuel tank straps and remove using the 13 and 14 mm socket assy.

IMPORTANT: Note that the front attach points use washers as spacers BETWEEN the tank strap and the frame. Make sure to capture them and save them for re-install

8. Carefully lower tank until you can get your hand above it. Remove the attaching fuel line and sending unit connector on the top of the tank prior to dropping the tank further and removing it.

IMPORTANT: Prior to dis-assembly. Note the notch in the tank upper ring seal and mark it’s location on the tank

Note; The fuel pump/sending unit is spring loaded and may pop up when upper seal plate is removed.

10.Remove nuts and washers attaching upper seal plate, saving them for re-assembly. Remove upper seal plate and mark on the tank, the location of the tab on the fuel pump/ sending unit.

9. Put one hand into tank, supporting lower tank seal and split plate. Remove upper tank seal.

10. Fold inner split plate and old seal and remove them.

11. Install lower seal on split plate.

NOTE: Make sure notch on seal and notch on split plate line up prior to installation

12. Fold and install lower seal and split plate

NOTE: Make SURE the notch in the lower split plate and seal line up with the mark on the tank.

13. Use retaining washers purchased locally (NAPA 66525380) to HOLD the lower seal assembly in position

14. Clean tank surface and install upper seal on top of tank and retaining washers.

NOTE: Make sure notch in upper seal lines up with mark made on tank earlier

15. Re-install fuel pump/sending unit.

NOTE: Make sure tab on fuel pump/sending unit lines up with positioning marks made on the tank earlier.

IMPORTANT: Improper installation may create clearance issues and inproper sending unit readings

16. Install upper seal plate making sure the tab on the fuel pump/sending unit lines up with the indent in the lower face of the upper seal plate.

INSTALLED CORRECTLY

17. Install fuel pump/ sending unit upper seal plate, washers and nuts.

NOTE; these nuts are to be tightened to  10ft./lb.

18.  Raise tank back into vehicle making sure to re-connect electrical connector and fuel line.

19.  Install tank in vehicle  by reversing the dis-assembly process.

Note. Tank strap retaining  hardware should be tightened to 20 ft./lb.

Check all connections to ensure they are secure, start and idle engine to check for leaks.

Vantage Mobility International (VMI) has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in its Chrysler/Dodge AMS converted Edge/Verge II rear entry mobility vehicle.

It is important that you call your AMS Edge/Verge II manufacturer as soon as possible at the number listed below

 

What Is Being Recalled

All Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans modified by VMI for AMS into the Edge/Verge II conversion, shipped between November 29, 2018 and October 3, 2019, are being recalled by VMI. Your mobility manufacturer will have access to the complete list of affected vehicles identified by FCA’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is a 17-digit identifier that includes both numbers and letters. It can be found on the OEM sticker, located inside the driver’s side door jamb or on the driver’s side dashboard, visible from the exterior facing the windshield.

The affected population is 122 vehicles.

 

Why Is It Being Recalled

The fuel tank was assembled with a fuel pump gasket that could deteriorate and fail over time. This may lead to the escapement of fuel or fumes, fuel gauge inaccuracy, and/or EVAP system leaks. These symptoms while not all hazardous may result in exposed risk including but not limited to the following: loss of power/running out of fuel, OTC codes, headache our nausea, fire or explosion whose severity could include injury or death and/or damage to property.

 

What AMS(VMI) Will Do

AMS has replacement parts available at no charge that will be made available to your local repair facility. AMS will include factory authorized instructions with the parts and technical support via email or phone to your repair facility to ensure the tank assembly is replaced correctly. Any additional materials required, and all labor costs will be covered by AMS. The estimated time to complete this repair on your vehicle will be approximately 4 hours.

After an attempt to take advantage of this recall, you may submit a complaint if you believe your brake line recall was not remedied without charge and/or within a reasonable amount of time.

What You as Owner/Dealer/Operator Should Do

Immediately call your local AMS manufacturer at 1 (855) 809-1627 to schedule your vehicle for the brake line replacement. Inform them at the time of the call that you are calling in response to this recall letter. They will work with you and your local repair facility to schedule your appointment and the shipment of parts. If you have difficulty doing this, please contact VMI directly at (800) 488-9082 for assistance.

 

What If You No Longer Own the Vehicle?

Please call AMS at the number listed below and forward the new owners contact information for proper and timely notification.
If you are the lessor of this vehicle, please forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days to comply with federal regulations.
