Size : NR Function : Axle Descriptive Information : This issue potentially affects certain Ultimate Dana 60™ Bracketless Crate Axles® sold to aftermarket customers for use in some Jeep® Wrangler® vehicle applications. Production Dates : SEP 07, 2022 – SEP 08, 2022 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The position in which covered axles are inadvertently installed in vehicles may not allow sufficient lubrication to reach the axles’ pinion tail bearings. This condition can lead to a pinion tail bearing seizure. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a pinion tail bearing seizure, the axle may not rotate. This could affect a vehicle operator’s operation of the vehicle. Description of the Cause : The installed position of the axle’s suspension bracket may not allow sufficient lubrication to reach the axle pinion tail bearing. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Drivers will likely experience substantial noise and vibration of the axle before any pinion tail bearing seizure would occur. Dana investigated the reports, and determined that both axles were manufactured in the same lot. Upon further investigation, Dana identified the same issue in two other axles in its possession manufactured in the same lot, as well as root cause: an operator did not use an available checking fixture that would have detected the issue. Dana promptly assessed the potential consequence of the issue, and as a result of its evaluation, makes this report in an abundance of caution. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to the consumer or retail purchaser, Dana will replace all units that are the subject of this report. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The issue is isolated to one manufacturing lot in which the issue occurred in production, and was inadvertently not detected by the operating technician. Replacement parts will not have the production issue, which will be mechanically confirmed in all replacement axles. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The recall condition was due to an isolated issue in production, and the technician did not confirm the geometry with the checking tool as required. Dana has updated its production processes to prevent a recurrence.
