Driver Warnings May Not Illuminate

Failure of the instrument cluster to properly illuminate may prevent the driver from receiving warnings about the vehicle’s systems, increasing the risk of crash.

Summary

ChryslereBay logo (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019 DodgeeBay logo Challenger and Charger and ChryslereBay logo 300 vehicles. The instrument cluster may not properly illuminate driver warnings. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, “Control and Displays.”

 

Remedy

ChryslereBay logo has notified owners, and dealers will update the instrument cluster software, free of charge. The recall began April 8, 2019. Owners may contact ChryslereBay logo customer service at 1-800-853-1403. ChryslereBay logo’s number for this recall is V32.

NOTE:  Some vehicles above may have been identified as not involved in this recall and therefore have been excluded from this recall.

IMPORTANT:  Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory.  Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service.  Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

 

Subject

The Instrument Cluster on about 7,919 of the above vehicles may have software which can cause the cluster to inadvertently stop displaying vehicle information. The loss of a functioning instrument cluster may prevent the activation of warning chimes, messages and gauges to provide vehicle information to the driver, which may increase the risk of a crash without warning.

The condition above fails to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.101 S5.3 –  which requires to “illuminate telltales and their identification sufficiently to make them visible to the driver under daylight and nighttime driving conditions.”

 

Repair

The Instrument Panel Cluster will need to be reprogrammed on all of the above vehicles involved.

NOTE: If the vehicle cluster is not displaying vehicle information when the customer arrives for the recall DO NOT REPLACE THE CLUSTER simply disconnect the 12-volt battery ground cable for 5 -10 seconds and reconnect. This procedure will reset the cluster to display vehicle information.

 

Special Tools

The following special tool is required to perform this repair:  

➢ NPNwiTECH micro pod II
➢ NPNLaptop Computer
➢ NPNwiTECH Software

 

Service Procedure

NOTE: The wiTECH scan tool must be used to perform this Customer Satisfaction Notification.  The wiTECH software is required to be at the latest release level before performing this procedure.  If the reprogramming flash is aborted or interrupted, repeat the procedure. 

 

  1. Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts.  Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process.  Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge.

 

NOTE:  Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter.  The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate.  Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash.  If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.

 

  1. Connect the wiTECH micro pod II to the vehicle data link connector.
  2. Place the ignition in the “RUN” position.
  3. Open the wiTECH 2.0 website.
  4. Enter your “User id” and “Password” and your “Dealer Code”, then select “Sign In” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Accept”.
  5. From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated.
  6. From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab.
  7. From the “Topology” tab, select the “IPC” icon.
  8. From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed.
    • If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 13.
    • If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10.
  9. Read the flash special instructions page. Select “OK” to continue.
  10. From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box.
  11. Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.
  12. From the “Topology” screen, select the “All DTCs” tab to view the DTCs.
  13. Select “Clear All DTCs” and then select “Close”.
  14. Place the ignition in the “OFF” position and then remove the wiTECH micro pod II device from the vehicle.
  15. Remove the battery charger from the vehicle.
  16. Close the vehicle hood and return the vehicle to the customer.
