An ESC malfunction indicator light that fails to illuminate during an electronic stability control problem can increase the risk of a crash.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Ram
2500 and 2021-2022 Dodge
Durango vehicles, and 2019-2022 3500 cab chassis with GVWR less than 10,000 lbs. The ABS control module software may prevent the electronic stability control (ESC) malfunction indicator light from illuminating during certain conditions. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the ABS control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Z20.

4500/5500 CAB Chassis, 2021 and 2022 (WD) Dodge
Durango vehicles.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
Some of the above vehicles may have been built with an Antilock Brake System (ABS) control module that may have software which prevents the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) telltale lamp from properly displaying under certain conditions. Unexpected performance of the ESC system with no warning to the driver can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.
The condition described above does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.126 S5.3 ESC Malfunction requires that “The vehicle must be equipped with a telltale that provides a warning to the driver of the occurrence of one or more malfunctions that affect the generation or transmission of control or response signals in the vehicle’s electronic stability control system.” Suspect vehicles may not display the ESC malfunction indicator lamp under certain conditions leaving the driver unaware of degraded ESC system that is not limiting engine torque during an ESC event.
SERVICE ACTION
FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall to update the ABS control module software. Dealers will be notified of the launch of this safety recall by way of established communication methods. This recall is estimated to launch in 1st Quarter of 2022.

NOTE: Some vehicles above may have been identified as not involved in this recall and therefore have been excluded from this recall.
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.
Subject
The Antilock Brake System (ABS) control module software on about 370,437 of the above vehicles may prevent the Electronic Stability Control (“ESC”) telltale lamp from properly displaying under certain conditions. Unexpected performance of the ESC system with no warning to the driver can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.

CAUTION: Do not interrupt the software update process in any way once it has begun. It may cause permanent damage to the ABS module which will require replacement. It is highly recommended to use special care when reprogramming the ABS module.

Service Procedure
- Reprogramming ABS Module Procedure.
CAUTION: Do not interrupt the software update process in any way once it has begun. It may cause permanent damage to the ABS module which will require replacement. It is highly recommended to use special care when reprogramming the ABS module.
If the software update on a 2022 model year vehicle is unsuccessful and cannot be reprogrammed, please contact the STAR Center, and provide the following information:
- VIN number
- Whether or not the vehicle is owned by a customer or is unsold
- Screenshots of Witech showing a failed flash (if available).
NOTE: When creating a STAR Case in Cherwell please select under Next Step: Y26/Z20 Recall and your case will be delivered to the appropriate STAR team for expedient response.
NOTE: The wiTECH scan tool must be used to perform this customer satisfaction notification. If the Antilock Brake System (ABS) Module is aborted or interrupted during reprogramming, it must be restarted. The ABS software must be at the latest software calibration level after
provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the completing this customer satisfaction notification.
- Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge.
NOTE: Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter. The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.
- Connect the wiTECH micro pod II to the vehicle data link connector.
- Place the ignition in the “RUN” position.
- Open the wiTECH 2.0 website.
- Enter your “User id” and “Password” and your “Dealer Code”, then select “Sign In” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Accept”.
- From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated.
- From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab.
- From the “Topology” tab, select the “ABS” module icon.
- From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed.
- If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 14.
- If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10.
- From the ABS tab, select the latest ABS flash part number. Read the flash special instructions page. Select “OK” to continue.
- From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box.
- Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.
- Confirm the software is at the latest available calibration level.
- Click “View DTCs”, select “Clear All DTCs”, click “Continue” and then click “Close”.
- From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab.
- From the topology screen select “ABS”
- From the “ABS View” screen select the “Flash” tab. Compare the “Current Flash Number” with the “New Part Number” listed on the “sort table”. If the “Current Flash Number” is the same as the “New Part Number” continue to Step 22. If the part numbers are not the same, continue with Step 18.
- From the ABS tab, select the ABS flash part number. Read the flash special instructions page. Select “OK” to continue.
- From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box.
- Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.
- Confirm the software is at the latest available calibration level.
- Cycle the ignition key to the ”Off” position, then to the “On” position.
- Click “View DTCs”, select “Clear All DTCs”, click “Continue” and then click “Close”.
- Place the ignition in the “OFF” position and then remove the wiTECH micro pod II device from the vehicle.
- Remove the battery charger from the vehicle.
- Close the vehicle hood.
- Return the vehicle to the customer.
Chronology :
- On February 9, 2022, FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization recognized that the ESC system malfunction indicator lamp may not illuminate under certain conditions when the ESC system experienced a fault, potentially not in compliance with FMVSS No. 126.
- On March 03, 2022, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-140 Page 6 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to update the ABS control module software. FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy is updated ABS control module software that will meet FMVSS 126 ESC Malfunction requirements.
