Vehicle Rollaway Due to ABS Malfunction

A vehicle that starts and shifts out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside of the vehicle.

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. A malfunction in the antilock-brake system (ABS) module may illuminate the brake lights, and allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.

 

Remedy

The remedy includes updated HCU/ABS module software that prevents the HCU/ABS module from falsely reading pressure in the primary circuit. FCA has decided to do a two-Phase Campaign remedy schedule. Phase 1 began November 17, 2022. Phase 2 begin date has not been determined yet. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed July 28, 2020. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 29, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Z48.

New Safety Recall Advanced Communication – Z48

FCA US LLC (FCA US) has announced a safety recall on certain 2018 and 2019 Model Year (WK) Jeep® Grand Cherokee and (WD) Dodge Durango vehicles.

 

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

Some of the above vehicles may have been built with a Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU/ABS) Anti-lock Brake System module that falsely reads pressure in the primary circuit. An HCU/ABS module that falsely reads pressure in the primary circuit may illuminate the brake lights, as well as allows the vehicle to start and shift out of park without the brake pedal being depressed. This condition can result in unintended vehicle movement and cause a vehicle crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside the vehicle.

 

SERVICE ACTION

FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles. The remedy for this condition is currently under development. Dealers will be notified when a remedy for this safety recall becomes available by way of established communication methods.

NOTE:  Some vehicles above may have been identified as not involved in this recall and therefore have been excluded from this recall.

 

IMPORTANT:  Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory.  Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service.

Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

 

Subject

Anti-lock Brake System module on about 206,500 of the above vehicles may have been built with a Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU/ABS) Anti-lock Brake System module that falsely reads pressure in the primary circuit. An HCU/ABS module that falsely reads pressure in the primary circuit may illuminate the brake lights, as well as allows the vehicle to start and shift out of park without the brake pedal being depressed. This condition can result in unintended vehicle movement and cause a vehicle crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside the vehicle.

 

Repair

Reprogram the ABS Control Module with the latest software level.

Service Procedure

NOTE: The wiTECH scan tool must be used to perform this Safety Recall.  If the Antilock Brake System (ABS) Module is aborted or interrupted during reprogramming, it must be restarted. The ABS software must be at the latest software calibration level after completing this Safety Recall.

 

  1. Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge .

 

NOTE:  Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter.  The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate.  Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash.  If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.

 

  1. Connect the wiTECH micro pod II to the vehicle data link connector.

 

  1. Place the ignition in the “RUN” position.

 

  1. Open the wiTECH 2.0 website.

 

  1. Enter your “User id” and “Password” and your “Dealer Code”, then select “Sign In” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Accept”.

 

  1. From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated.

 

  1. From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab.

 

  1. From the “Topology” tab, select the “ABS” module icon.

 

  1. From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed.
    • If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 14.
    • If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10.

 

  1. From the ABS tab, select the latest ABS flash part number. Read the flash special instructions page.  Select “OK” to continue.

 

  1. From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box.

 

  1. Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.

 

  1. Confirm the software is at the latest available calibration level.

 

  1. Click “View DTCs”, select “Clear All DTCs”, click “Continue” and then click “Close”.

 

  1. Place the ignition in the “OFF” position and then remove the wiTECH micro pod II device from the vehicle.

 

  1. Remove the battery charger from the vehicle.

 

  1. Close the vehicle hood.

 

  1. Return the vehicle to the customer.

 


Chronology :

  • On October 5, 2021, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened an investigation based on an increase in warranty claims on some Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles of customers experiencing the brake lights staying on.
  • From October 2021, to January 2022, FCA US TSRC reviewed and analyzed warranty records, and determined that Dodge Durango vehicles were also experiencing the brake lights staying on.
  • From January 2022, to May 2022, FCA US TSRC analyzed vehicle records, met with FCA US engineering to investigate the issue and the vehicles involved, and determined the suspect population of vehicles affected.
  • As of May 31, 2022, FCA US has identified 150 customer assistance records, 216 warranty claims, 29 field reports potentially relating to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from November 11, 2019 to May 24, 2022.
  • As of May 31, 2022, FCA US is not aware of any accidents or injuries potentially relating to this issue for all markets.
  • On June 2, 2022, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
