The suspect period was determined using supplier production records. Production Dates : DEC 08, 2021 – MAR 17, 2022 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-069 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) No. 571.111 S6.2.6 requires that “The rear visibility system default to the rearview image being visible and meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 571.111 S6.2.1 (field of view) and S6.2.2 (image size) at the beginning of each backing event, regardless of any modifications to the field of view that the driver had previously selected…”. FMVSS No. 571.108 requires that backup lamps “Must be activated when the ignition switch is energized and reverse gear is engaged.” When installed in a vehicle, suspect AGSs may not display the rearview image or activate the backup lamps during a backing event. FMVSS 1 : 111 – Rear visibility FMVSS 2 : 108 – Lamps, reflective devices, and assoc. Equipment Description of the Safety Risk : When installed in a vehicle, the vehicle operator will notice that the rearview image is not displayed if attempting to reference the image while backing. If this warning is not heeded, backing without verifying it is safe to do so could lead to an increased risk of injury to people outside the vehicle. Failure to illuminate the backup lamps may not adequately illuminate the roadway behind the vehicle or indicate to other drivers or pedestrians the intention to backup, which can cause a crash without prior warning. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : For the rearview camera, the driver will notice that the image is not displayed when the vehicle is placed into reverse. For the backup lamps, none. Involved Components : Component Name : GEAR POSITION Component Description : SENSOR Component Part Number : 68331278AB Component Name : TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY Component Description : MANUAL TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY Component Part Number : 05106257AF, 05106257AG Supplier Identification : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-069 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Manufacturer Name : Aisin World Corporation of America Address : 15300 Centennial Drive Northville Michigan 48168 Country : United States Chronology : • On April 24, 2023, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to the AGS on some Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles. • From April 25, 2023, through August 11, 2023, FCA US TSRC met with FCA US engineering to review the issue, understand part design and failure mode, and to determine the suspect population. • On August 22, 2023, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to a condition that can lead to the lack of rearview visibility and rearview lamps, potentially causing a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 111 and No. 108. • On September 11, 2023, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected units. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected parts to repurchase suspect AGSs and manual transmission assemblies equipped with suspect AGSs. FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component is a correctly manufactured AGS or a manual transmission assembly manufactured with a correctly manufactured AGS. 09/19/2023 _____________________________________________________________________ New Safety Recall Advanced Communication – 93A FCA US LLC (FCA US) has announced an equipment safety recall on certain Mopar Gear Position Sensors part number 68331278AB also Mopar Transmission Assemblies 05106257AG and 05106257AF intended for use on 2018-2023 model year (JL) Jeep® Wrangler and 2020-2023 model year (JT) Jeep® Gladiator vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL Some Gear Position Sensors / All Gear Sensors (AGSs) may have been improperly manufactured and some manual transmission assemblies may have been built with an improperly manufactured Gear Position Sensor / AGS which may cause the reverse lights and back-up camera to be disabled. When installed in a vehicle, suspect Gear Position Sensors / AGSs may not display the rearview image or activate the backup lamps during a backing event. The vehicle operator will notice that the rearview image is not displayed if attempting to reference the image while backing. FMVSS No. 571.108 requires that backup lamps “Must be activated when the ignition switch is energized and reverse gear is engaged.” SERVICE ACTION FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected parts to repurchase suspect gear position sensors / AGSs and manual transmission assemblies equipped with suspect gear position sensors / AGSs.
