Driver’s Air Bag May Not Deploy/FMVSS 208
An air bag that does not deploy in a crash can increase the risk of injury.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24E025
Manufacturer Chrysler
(FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis)
Components AIR BAGS, STEERING
Potential Number of Units Affected 10,908
Summary
Chrysler
(FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis) is recalling certain MOPAR steering column control modules, used as replacement parts in certain 2017-2024 Jeep
, Chrysler
, and Ram
vehicles. Please see the attached documents for specific part numbers and vehicle compatibility information. The steering column control module may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver’s air bag from deploying in a crash. As such, these control modules fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace, or repurchase the steering column control module, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 3, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is 15B.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
Some of the above steering column control modules (“SCCM”) may have been built with an insufficient weld between an internal flexible flat cable (“FFC”) and busbar. The suspect parts may not allow a deployment signal from the Occupant Restraint Controller to reach the driver airbag module, preventing airbag deployment during these events. An airbag that does not deploy when intended may result in increased risk of injury to the driver in certain crashes.
The condition described above does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.208 requires driver’s airbag deployment during certain crash events.
SERVICE ACTION
FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall to inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering column control module. The remedy for this condition is not currently available. Dealers will be notified of the launch of this safety recall by way of established communication methods. This recall is estimated to launch in 2nd Quarter of 2024.
Chronology :
- On November 9, 2023, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to an internal weld within SCCMs on some FCA US LLC vehicles.
- From November 2023, through January 2024, FCA US TSRC conducted an analysis of SCCM failure patterns and vehicle history and determined that the affected vehicles may have been built with SCCMs which may have poor weld adhesion between the FFC and busbar.
- On February 7, 2024, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to a condition that can lead to the driver’s airbag not deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 208.
- On March 7, 2024, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected units.

• On November 9, 2023, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to an internal weld within SCCMs on some FCA US LLC vehicles. • From November 2023, through January 2024, FCA US TSRC conducted an analysis of SCCM failure patterns and vehicle history and determined that the affected vehicles may have been built with SCCMs which may have poor weld adhesion between the FFC and busbar. • On February 7, 2024, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to a condition that can lead to the driver’s airbag not deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 208. • On March 7, 2024, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected units.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected parts to
inspect and, if necessary, replace or repurchase the SCCMs.
FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense.
How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
The defective component is the clockspring within the SCCM which is supplied to FCA US LLC by three different SCCM suppliers.

We ask that you please take the time to ensure that your personnel are aware of this communication and are prepared to execute a customer friendly process for inquiries regarding involved vehicles.
