New Safety Recall Advanced Communication – 24B
FCA US LLC (FCA US) has announced a safety recall on certain 2022 Model Year (KL) Jeep® Cherokee vehicles.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
Some of the above vehicles may have been built with a steering column control module (SCCM) detent spring that may prevent the turn signal lever from latching or staying latched for right hand turns. Suspect vehicles may have a turn signal lever assembly that self-cancels without steering wheel rotation or manual input. A turn signal unit that inadvertently self-cancels may result in surrounding drivers not receiving indication of the intent to change vehicle direction, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.
The condition described above does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 S9.1.1 which requires that “The turn signal operating unit [ …] must be self-canceling by steering wheel rotation and capable of cancellation by a manually operated control.”
SERVICE ACTION
FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall to inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering column control module. The remedy for this condition is not currently available. Dealers will be notified of the launch of this safety recall by way of established communication methods. This recall is estimated to launch in the 2nd Quarter of 2024.
Chronology :
- On July 20, 2022, FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to turn signal levers that may not latch or stay latched for right hand turns on some 2022 MY Jeep Cherokee vehicles.
- From September 2022, through February 2024, FCA US TSRC reviewed warranty data, field records, and customer assistance records to understand potential customer consequence.
- From May 2022, through November 2022, warranty parts returns were studied for root cause.
- From November 2022, through February 2023, FCA US TSRC held several internal reviews with FCA US Supplier Operations, and FCA US Engineering regarding whether the behavior is regulated by FMVSS No. 108.
- From March 2023, through October 2023, FCA US TSRC, FCA US Supplier Operations, and FCA US Engineering met regularly with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to review their manufacturing processes, parts control procedures, and shipping records to understand the scope of the issue.
- From October 2023, through February 2024, FCA US Engineering enhanced field assessment criteria.
- On March 6, 2024, FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle turn signal lever assembly issue existed on certain vehicles related to the turn signal lever not latching or staying latched for right hand turns, potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 108.
