Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain Jeep
Grand Cherokee L vehicles equipped with smart lighting modules (SLM). An incomplete SLM software update may cause one or both headlights to become inoperable. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the SLM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 23, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC’s number for this recall is Y72.

New Safety Recall Advanced Communication – Y72
FCA US LLC (FCA US) has announced a safety recall on certain 2021 Model Year (WL) Jeep® Grand Cherokee L vehicles.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
Suspect vehicles may have one or both headlamps inoperable. Inoperable headlamps may result in reduced visibility for the driver, which can cause vehicle crash without prior warning.
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (“FMVSS”) 571.108, Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment, Section 6, Table 1A requires lower beam headlamps that “are energized when the beam selector switch is in the lower beam position.”
SERVICE ACTION
FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to reprogram the Smart Lighting Module (SLM). The remedy for this condition is not currently available. Dealers will be notified of the launch of this safety recall by way of established communication methods. This recall is estimated to launch in 4th Quarter of 2021.

Effective immediately all repairs on involved vehicles are to be performed according to this recall. Service Action / Rapid Response Transmittal (RRT) 21-109 / Service Bulletin (TSB) 08-127-21 is no longer applicable for the vehicles involved in this recall.

NOTE: Some vehicles above may have been identified as not involved in this recall and therefore have been excluded from this recall.
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

Reprogram the left or right Smart Lighting Modules (SLML and SLMR), or both as needed.

Service Procedure
A. Inspect Headlamps
- Turn the headlamp knob to the ON position.
- Are both headlamps working on low and high beam?
- Yes: No further action is required. Close the recall.
- No: Reprogram the SLM for each inoperative headlamp, left or right.
B. Reprogram the SLML or SLMR
NOTE: The wiTECH scan tool must be used to perform this recall. The wiTECH software is required to be at the latest release level before performing this procedure.
- Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge.
NOTE: Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter. The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.
- Place the ignition in the “RUN” position.
- Connect the wiTECH MDP to the vehicle data link connector.
- Open the wiTECH 2.0 website.
- Enter your “User id” and “Password” and your “Dealer Code”, then select “Sign In” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Accept”.
- From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated.
- From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab.
- From the “Topology” tab, select the “SLML or SLMR” icon.
- From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed.
- If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 14.
- If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10.
- From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box.
- Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash.
- From the “Topology” screen, select the “All DTCs” tab to view the DTCs.
- Select “Clear All DTCs” and then select “Close”.
- Place the ignition in the “OFF” position and then remove the wiTECH MDP device from the vehicle.
- Remove the battery charger from the vehicle.
- Close the vehicle hood and return the vehicle to the customer.
Chronology :
- On November 17, 2021, FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance recognized an incomplete SLM software update existed on certain vehicles resulting in one or both headlamps being inoperable, potentially not in compliance with FMVSS No. 108.
- On December 02, 2021, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge. NOTE: Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter. The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage. 2. Place the ignition in the “RUN” position. 3. Connect the wiTECH MDP to the vehicle data link connector. 4. Open the wiTECH 2.0 website. 5. From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated. 7. From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab. 8. From the “Topology” tab, select the “SLML or SLMR” icon. 9. From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed. If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 14. If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10. 10. From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box. 11. Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash. 12. From the “Topology” screen, select the “All DTCs” tab to view the DTCs. 13. Select “Clear All DTCs” and then select “Close”. 14.
