No parts return required for this campaign. The following special tools are required to perform this repair: ➢ NPN wiTECH MicroPod II ➢ NPN Laptop Computer ➢ NPN wiTECH Software Repair Parts Information Parts Return Special Tools Safety Recall Z48 – Anti-Lock Brake Module Software Page 3 NOTE: The wiTECH scan tool must be used to perform this Safety Recall. If the Antilock Brake System (ABS) Module is aborted or interrupted during reprogramming, it must be restarted. The ABS software must be at the latest software calibration level after completing this Safety Recall. 1. Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. Do not allow the charger to time out during the flash process. Set the battery charger timer (if so equipped) to continuous charge. NOTE: Use an accurate stand-alone voltmeter. The battery charger volt meter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful flash. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage. 2. Connect the wiTECH micro pod II to the vehicle data link connector. 3. Place the ignition in the “RUN” position. 4. Open the wiTECH 2.0 website. 5. Enter your “User id” and “Password” and your “Dealer Code”, then select “Sign In” at the bottom of the screen. Click “Accept”. 6. From the “Vehicle Selection” screen, select the vehicle to be updated. 7. From the “Action Items” screen, select the “Topology” tab. 8. From the “Topology” tab, select the “ABS” module icon. From the “Flash” tab, compare the “Current Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Part Number” with the “New ECU Part Number” listed. ➢ If the “Current ECU part Number” is the same as the “New Part Number”, proceed to Step 14. ➢ If the “Current ECU part Number” is NOT the same as the “New Part Number”, continue with Step 10. 10. From the ABS tab, select the latest ABS flash part number. Read the flash special instructions page. Select “OK” to continue. 11. From the flash ECU agreement page, agree to terms by checking the box. 12. Select “Flash ECU” and then follow the wiTECH screen instructions to complete the flash. 13. Confirm the software is at the latest available calibration level. 14. Click “View DTCs”, select “Clear All DTCs”, click “Continue” and then click “Close”. 15. Place the ignition in the “OFF” position and then remove the wiTECH micro pod II device from the vehicle. 16. Remove the battery charger from the vehicle. 17. Close the vehicle hood. 18. Return the vehicle to the customer. RECALL Z48 CUSTOMER COMMUNICATIONS DEC 2022 Letters regarding Recall Z48 were mailed to all originally-identified owners beginning on July 28, 2022. However, some vehicles were included in the recall that, after further investigation, should not have been. Customers whose vehicles should not have been included in the recall will be receiving a letter stating that FCA US LLC has decided, after further investigation, that their vehicles actually did not contain the component that is the subject of the recall. The letter will also inform these customers there is no action required on their part and that their vehicles are being removed from the recall notification list. The letter will also include an apology for the miscommunication. Note that owners of vehicles equipped with sales code NHM were mailed final notification letters beginning on November 29, 2022, advising a remedy was available and to schedule a service appointment. Once the error was discovered, several thousand VINs were removed from the population of Recall Z48 on December 10, 2022. Root cause determination supported this action and the use of traceability numbers from manufacturing allowed the removal of all vehicles with sales code NH3 and many with NHM. Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-426 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name 1 : Hydraulic Control Unit Module / Antilock Brake Sys Component Description : Module – Hydraulic Control Unit / Module – Antilock Brake System Module Component Part Number : 68336274AB, 68408605AB Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : ZF Friedrichshafen AG Address : 12001 Tech Center Drive Livonia Michigan 48150 Country : United States Chronology : • On October 5, 2021, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened an investigation based on an increase in warranty claims on some Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles of customers experiencing the brake lights staying on. • From October 2021, to January 2022, FCA US TSRC reviewed and analyzed warranty records, and determined that Dodge Durango vehicles were also experiencing the brake lights staying on. • From January 2022, to May 2022, FCA US TSRC analyzed vehicle records, met with FCA US engineering to investigate the issue and the vehicles involved, and determined the suspect population of vehicles affected. • As of May 31, 2022, FCA US has identified 150 customer assistance records, 216 warranty claims, 29 field reports potentially relating to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from November 11, 2019 to May 24, 2022. • As of May 31, 2022, FCA US is not aware of any accidents or injuries potentially relating to this issue for all markets. • On June 2, 2022, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-426 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to reprogram the HCU/ABS module. FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy includes updated HCU/ABS module software that prevents the HCU/ABS module from falsely reading pressure in the primary circuit. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : NR Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : **11/15/2022: FCA US mailed Interim owner letters on 7/28/2022. This will be a Phased campaign. Phase 1 will include vehicles built with sales code NHM. FCA US will notify dealers and begin notifying owners on or about 11/17/2022. Phase 2 will include vehicles built without sales code NHM.
